Feel Good About Eating These Fall Foods
From comfort foods to pumpkin-spice-flavored everything, autumn gets many of us thinking about our next meal. And it’s no wonder: the fall harvest is full of delicious (and nutritious!) eats. Yahoo! Health recently featured a run-down of fall produce to help you on your next trip to the grocery store or farmers market. Here are some highlights from the article:
- Apples. Apples contain polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants found primarily in the peels. Apples are also full of insoluble and soluble fiber—which can lower cholesterol and ease digestion—and they can help keep teeth clean by stimulating saliva that flushes bacteria out of the mouth. Now that’s something to smile about!
- Fennel. Many people are familiar with the licorice-like flavor of fennel seeds, but not everyone knows that the fennel plant is a nutritious vegetable. It is a good source of fiber, potassium, and vitamin C—an antioxidant that can help boost the immune system and help keep colds at bay. Fennel also contains an array of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant phytochemicals that contribute to its reputation as a superfood.
- Herbs. Herbs are in the flavor-boosting business. Powerful antioxidant phytochemicals contribute to their rich flavors and health benefits. Add them to high-protein foods or other dishes: rosemary and thyme go well with scrambled eggs and sage adds zest to a pot of lentils or a plate of roasted carrots.
- Kale. This superfood is an excellent source of vitamin K, beta-carotene, vitamin C, manganese, and copper, and a good source of fiber. It’s also high in lutein, a plant pigment that helps protect our vision and our blood vessels through its antioxidant effects.
- Pears. Pears contain flavonoids which have been found to decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes. Pears are also a good source of fiber and vitamin C, which are important for blood sugar control and heart health. So, end your autumnal feasts with this sweet treat!
