Botanicals for a Healthy Brain
In an interview on the website, NutraIngredients-USA, botanical experts Chris Kilham, also known as “The Medicine Hunter,” and Mark Blumenthal, executive director of the American Botanical Council, discussed their favorite botanical ingredients for brain health.
Their lists included schisandra (counteracting tiredness), ashwagandha (cognitive performance), vinpocetine (circulation), curcumin (cognitive performance), ginseng (memory), rhodiola (cognitive performance), bacopa (memory), and ginkgo (cognitive performance). Contrary to the view held by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), which states that there is no strong evidence that natural remedies can prevent cognitive decline, Kilham stated that there is indeed a vast amount of scientific evidence to back up the efficacy of the herbs mentioned. While Kilham cautioned that botanical options do not work as quickly as most pharmaceuticals, he referred to the science behind these options as “strong” and “definitive.”
