White Oak Bark is right up there in the class of powerful astringents, which includes Shepherd’s Purse, Witch Hazel, and Cranesbill. Like those herbs, White Oak Bark acts to tighten tissues, and reduce excess fluids, secretions and discharges.
White Oak Bark is a time-honored Native American remedy. In fact, several groups including the Iroquois, the Penobscots, and the Menominees utilized all parts of the White Oak tree in their traditional medicines. Current uses in Western herbalism mirror some of those applications, namely to soothe gastrointestinal distress and promote venous health. COMMON NAMES: Hu, White Tanner’s Bark.
